Mental Health & Addiction Services for Older People (MHSOP)

Our team offers specialist assessment and treatment for people aged 65 years and older, with suspected significant mental health problems and/or addiction – presenting in later life. We provide specialist care for people with dementia with BPSD (challenging behavioural and/or psychological symptoms of dementia). People under the age of 65 who experience "age related" mental health and addiction problems are also supported by the team.

Our vision is to: “Empower older people to maintain dignity and value within their family and community.”
We provide a community based service. Staff include: nurses; psychiatrists; social worker; occupational therapists and a psychologist. We work in close collaboration with our whai manaaki to ensure expert cultural support is available to people who identify as Maori.

People are usually seen in their own homes but we do also provide outpatient clinics at our facility in Rangiuru Street, Rotorua and from the Taupo based Southern Lakes Community Mental Health & Addiction Service, which has now moved from Gascoigne Street, Taupo to the Taupo Hospital site.
