Lakes DHB Lakes DHB is increasing COVID-19 testing hours in Taupō in response to the positive COVID-19 waste water test in Taupō.

Lakes DHB Medical Officer of Health at Toi Te Ora Public Health, Dr Lynne Lane, says it is important that anyone in the Taupō district or who has visited the district in the past week and who has COVID-19 symptoms – no matter how mild – should get tested, and remain isolated until they return a negative test result.

For information on where to get tested and vaccinated in Taupō and Tūrangi see Healthpoint

“The wastewater result is an indication that there could be a positive COVID-19 case in the community. Getting a COVID-19 swab if you are experiencing symptoms that could be COVID-19, is important to help contain further spread of the virus," Dr Lane says.

“It is also important to follow other health measures including wearing face coverings, using the COVID-19 tracer app, practicing good hand hygiene and social distancing.”

Dr Lane also stresses the importance of vaccination.

“Getting fully vaccinated is key to protecting yourself and those you love against COVID-19.”

Lakes DHB Chief Executive Nick Saville-Wood says it is becoming more urgent for people to be vaccinated to protect their whānau, whakapapa and community and ensure health services are not overwhelmed.

The Ministry of Health announced today that a waste water sample collected from Taupō on 8 November detected the COVID-19 virus. A further sample was collected on 10 November and is currently being analysed.

A positive wastewater test can sometimes result from an historical case who may continue to shed fragments of the virus for some weeks after their illness – even if they are not infectious.

Anyone in the area, who may have symptoms – no matter how mild – is encouraged to get tested, even if they are vaccinated.
