Big Latch On marks breastfeeding week

Good numbers of breastfeeding mothers turned up to events last Friday to celebrate breastfeeding.

The nationwide Big Latch On event on 4 August was held to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week and its theme of "sustaining breastfeeding together".

In Rotorua, more than 60 mothers gathered at The Harvest Centre on Malfroy Rd for the annual Big Latch On event.  DHB community lactation consultant Amy Wray said the event went "really well with 66 registrations, 20 more than last year".

Amy Wray said nine service providers also attended the event who worked in the community helping mothers and babies and giving support when needed.

She said there had been positive feedback from attendees; with women feeling more confident about breastfeeding in public and awareness of where to go for support.

Plunket community services co-ordinator Louise Perese said they came along every year to support the Big Latch On and local mothers.

In Turangi, 10 mothers attended the Big Latch On organised by Chelsie Robertson, lactation consultant and midwife, and in Taupo just under 20 mothers attended the event organised by the La Leche League.

Lakes DHB’s community lactation service started up in April 2016 and has been seeing an average of 56 mothers a month, with 35 of those in Rotorua and 21 in Taupo Turangi.

Lakes District Health Board is very excited to be providing a free community breastfeeding service to support women to breastfeed their babies.

Lactation consultants, Amy Wray (in Rotorua) and Chelsie Robertson (in Taupo/Turangi) will assist local women with breastfeeding including regular drop-in breastfeeding clinics in the community and home visits as needed.
Women wanting to access the free community lactation support can ring 0800 LakesBaby (0800 525 372).
