General surgery — Wellington, Hutt and Kapiti
Our general surgery service provides both emergency (acute) and planned (elective) surgery for people in Wellington, Hutt and Kapiti. We also provide specialist surgery services to Manawatū-Whanganui, Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa.
Services we provide
We work with people in hospital as well as outpatients.
Our surgeons do more than perform operations. Many people are referred to surgeons with conditions that do not need surgical procedures — they may require counselling or medical treatment instead.
When you come to your appointment, the surgeon will:
- ask questions about your illness
- examine you to determine or confirm your diagnosis.
This process may also require a number of tests, such as blood tests, x-rays or scans. Sometimes this can all be done during one visit, but for some conditions this will take several follow-up appointments. Some tests can be arranged before your appointment.
Once a diagnosis has been made, the surgeon will discuss treatment with you. In some instances this will mean surgery, while other cases can be managed with medication and advice.
If you need surgery, the steps involved in the surgical process and the likely outcome are usually discussed with you at this time.
