What is an infectious disease?

An infectious disease is a disease caused by pathogenic micro-organisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi or parasites.

Not all infectious diseases are contagious. Infectious diseases vary in their ability to be spread from one person to another; those that do spread are known as contagious or communicable diseases.

About the Infectious Diseases team

Te Whatu Ora Lakes has a small specialist infectious disease team who will see current patients who are under the treatment of other services in Rotorua Hospital.

The team offers advice on the appropriate management of problems due to infection.

The team run regular outpatient clinics for patients who have been discharged from hospital on complex antibiotic regimes and for community referrals.

The Infectious Disease team also provide the Te Whatu Ora Lakes HIV Service.
