Blood cancer harms the cells that give you energy, fight infections and stop bleeding. When you have blood cancer it puts these functions at risk. There are many effective ways to treat blood cancer, but not all blood cancers need treating as soon as they are diagnosed.

Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia

Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) is a type of slow-growing leukaemia that affects B-lymphocytes. B-lymphocytes are white blood cells that produce antibodies to fight infections. With CLL, the cells become cancerous.

Leukaemia

Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood cells that develop in the bone marrow. It makes young blood cells grow and multiply in an abnormal way.

Lymphoma

Lymphoma develops in the lymphatic system — part of your immune system. It makes certain white blood cells (lymphocytes) grow and multiply in an abnormal way.

Myeloma

Myeloma is a cancer that develops in the bone marrow. It causes abnormal plasma cells to build up which crowds out all other types of healthy blood cells.

Myelodysplastic syndromes (myelodysplasia or MDS)

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of rare blood cancers. There are many different types of MDS. Some can stay mild for years and others are more serious. MDS can affect people of any age, but they are most common over the age of 70.
