Helplines

There are several helplines you can call if you need to talk to someone.

0800 What's up?

0800 What's up? is a free counselling helpline, chat and email service for tamariki and rangatahi. No issue is too small or too big.

1737

1737 is staffed by a team of paid counsellors who can talk to you if you have mental health or addiction problems.

Call or text 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you feel:

  • anxious
  • down
  • a bit overwhelmed.

Or call if you just need someone to talk to.

Depression helpline

The Depression helpline is a free service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It has trained counsellors who can talk you through your problems and suggest help in your area.

Suicide crisis helpline

The suicide crisis helpline is a free service available 7 days a week. It is operated by trained and experienced social service practitioners who have undergone suicide prevention training.

If you think you, or someone you know, may be thinking about suicide, call the suicide crisis helpline for support.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call emergency services immediately on 111.

Youthline

Any young person in New Zealand, or anyone supporting a young person, can call or text Youthline for help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can chat online with a counsellor from 10am to 10pm through the Youthline website. You can also email at any time.

Alcohol Drug Helpline

Advice, information and support about drinking or other drug use.
