Occupational therapists

Occupational therapy helps people take part in everyday activities. Being involved in meaningful activities can improve a person's health and wellbeing.

What occupational therapists do

Occupational therapists work with people of all ages and all levels of ability. They can work with people who have:

  • an injury
  • illness
  • disability.

Occupational therapists consider how a person's difficulties affect their ability to do the things they want to do, need to do and are expected to do.

They teach people the skills and strategies needed to live a fulfilling life as independently and safely as possible.

Their focus is on helping people participate and perform meaningful everyday activities at home, work, at their learning environment or within their community.

This might include restoring skills, adapting tasks and learning self-management skills to:

  • take care of themselves
  • participate in work, learning or volunteering activities
  • be involved in leisure activities and be connected in their community.

Sometimes, occupational therapists assess and provide equipment for people to maintain their safety and independence.

Where occupational therapists work

Occupational therapists provide treatment in:

  • hospitals
  • primary health care facilities
  • aged care facilities
  • non-profit organisations
  • workplaces
  • schools
  • homes
  • private practices.

Cost of seeing an occupational therapist

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora provides some occupational therapy services.

If you meet certain criteria, your healthcare provider or specialist may refer you to see an occupational therapist through the public health system.

If you do not meet the criteria or do not want to wait, you can pay to see a private occupational therapist.

You may be able to claim the cost of your treatment through your health insurance. This will depend on the type of cover you have.

If you have had an injury and ACC has accepted your claim, ACC may pay for occupational therapy services you need due to an injury.

The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) is a government agency that helps pay for treatment if you are injured in an accident.

The ACC provides comprehensive, no-fault personal injury cover for all residents and visitors to Aotearoa New Zealand. This means if you are hurt in an accident, ACC can help no matter who caused the accident.

If you have an accident and need emergency care in a hospital, it will be covered by ACC.

ACC usually pays some of the other medical costs if you have an accident, like surgery, physiotherapy and medicines. ACC may also be able to cover some loss of earnings resulting from an accident.
