Services we provide
Our service is for adults aged 18 and over who need mental health support, but can continue with their usual lives in the community.
We have a team of professionals who provide a range of therapies including:
- medication
- individual therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), schema therapy to change unhealthy patterns of thinking, mindfulness work
- group therapy such as anxiety management, dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), bipolar education group, and the Leap into Work programme
- relaxation techniques
- recovery focused care
- support, care and treatment during times of unwellness.
We can also provide specialist support and advice to your usual healthcare provider to help them best help you with your mental health needs.
At times some people may need to be admitted to a mental health unit, but most of our mental health services are provided in the community.
If you or someone you know needs urgent help, you can call MHAIDS 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 0800 745 477.
If it is not urgent, you can find other options for support.
Where to get help for mental health
What you can expect from our service
You will be given an appointment time to come and see us. One of our clinicians will talk to you about:
- what has brought you to our mental health service
- what you have already tried
- what treatment or therapy options may be useful for you.
This initial appointment can take up to an hour.
If we agree our service can best meet your needs, we will develop a treatment plan for you. Our team will work with you to put your treatment plan in place.
If we agree that another service will better meet your needs, we can support you to access that service. Or, we may advise you on some on actions you can take at home that may help you to address your mental health issue.
Referral information
It is best that you are referred to us by your GP or other usual healthcare provider. It is important that they are aware and involved in your treatment planning and care.
Your GP is responsible for managing all health services for you (not just mental health) and they will provide your ongoing care once you no longer need to use our specialist mental health services.
You can self-refer to us if you prefer not to go through your GP.

Referrals to a respite house
If you need a short term break from your home, you may be referred to stay at a community-based crisis respite and recovery house. Houses are available in the Wellington region and at Wairarapa Hospital.
